British Values

At Gargrave School we ‘actively promote’ the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We know that these sit alongside our school values based around the word RESPECTFUL.

We do this in a variety of ways;

  • Year 6 visit London and learn about the strengths, advantages and disadvantages of democracy, and how democracy and the law works in Britain, in contrast to other forms of government in other countries.
  • We have a school council which ensures that all pupils within the school have a voice that is listened to, and we demonstrate how democracy works by actively promoting democratic processes by holding elections for the council in the style of a ‘general election’.  This year this included pupils writing their opinions and ideas and sharing it with classes.  The school council are involved in recruitment of staff – they give their opinions following writing and answering their own questions.
  • We build an understanding of different faiths through visits to local places e.g. Bradford science festival and also places of worship. This has allowed the pupils to gain a broader perspective of community.
    • We have had a whole school British values workshop using music and singing to gain an understanding of what the words mean in practice.
    •  The curriculum includes places beyond our community – we hold theme days – European and French days.
