Inter Competitions

Rugby

This year the Y5 and 6 were invited to take part in a rugby festival organised by England rugby.  It was a great opportunity to learn new skills and play different games with the oval ball. After a well deserved lunch, the pupils were split in different teams and took part in games to put into practice what they had learned in the morning. There were no leader boards at this event but we definitely came out with loads of new strategies and skills for our next rugby competitions.

Also, Hedley Verity was able to organise a mini tournament for both Y3/4 and Y5/6 to conclude a great term of weekly tag rugby sessions. Both classes really enjoyed taking part every Thursday afternoon and were able to demonstrate what they had learned at the tournament. We are looking forward to welcoming Hedley from Wharfedale Rugby Club again next year.

Finally, the Y5/6 girls were invited to take part in a girls only tag rugby tournament over at North Ribblesdale rugby club in Settle. The girls had so much fun and all played really well. Although the festival wasn’t a competition as such, the girls were proud to point out that they had won every game they had played!!! Well done Team Gargrave!!!

Tennis
Both Y3/4 and Y5/6 have had a great year of tennis. In the spring term, our selected teams travelled to the Skipton Tennis club to take part in a festival with other local schools. Both teams played really well and came third.
In the summer term, Ji, from Gargrave Tennis Club, as been able to take groups to our village tennis club to have a feel at playing on a brand new court! The children had lots of fun playing intra competition.

Hockey
This year, we welcomed other schools from our PE cluster to participate in a hockey tournament. One of our team qualified and got through to the next round. The next event took place at South Craven School and we proudly got through to the final. On Sunday the 8th of July; our team will represent Gargrave sport and compete in the North Yorkshire Finals which will take place in York. We are wishing them all the very best; and most of all to have lots of fun!

Playground Games
Our KS1 champions took part in a playground games festival held at Sandylands. They all took part in various activities and had fun being active despite the warm weather! Well done!

Football
Football was our first tournament and here at Gargrave School we have some experts! Our teams played really well and demonstrated great teamwork throughout the games, and never gave up even when the opposite side appeared a lot bigger than them! Which turned out true as some teams had mixed up their fixtures! Oh well, it was nonetheless a very good afternoon of sport and a great challenge to rise to!!

Cross Country
This year we were amazed by the number of children willing to have a go at cross country. Mrs Peel took nearly 40 children to the first round held in Aireville Park. It was an amazing event and everyone enjoyed taking part. Our amazing runners; Reece and Ethan got through and went on to compete at Dalby forest for the next round. Ethan qualified for the finals and finished at an impressive 13th position. We are very proud of our Gargrave runners this year; well done!

Athletics
A team of 16 year 3's and 4's were invited to take part in an athletics competition held at Sandylands. Each participant was challenged in 4 activities: long jump; javelin, 50m race and 300m race. They all did brilliantly despite the warm weather and had a fantastic afternoon. The sport leaders from The Academy in Skipton were in charge of this event and were very encouraging and helped our children achieve their best results.

Change 4 Life
4 of our Y3 children took part in a Change 4 Life festival held at Sandylands where they tried a variety of sports. They all enjoyed their day and showed real self belief when challenged were arising. Ayaan, was spotted whilst practicing his tennis skills by the Skipton Tennis coach and we are very pleased that he has now joined the club (who has just been voted best Tennis club in the country). Well done Ayaan and all for taking part.

Cricket
Our Y6s took part in a cricket tournament held at Sandylands where other teams from the neighbours schools joined them. All enjoyed taking part and had lots of fun playing together as a team. Cricket and rounders are often practiced during our lunchtime breaks; it seems to be a popular choice from our playmakers! Which has paid off as our fantastic team came second in the tournament. We were very pleased to hear this result! Well done!

Duathlon
This year, we were very fortunate to be able to organise a duathlon here at school. We welcomed neighbouring schools to join us for a morning of cycling and running. 30 static bikes were set up in the Hall; with music playing loud to help us peddle faster! We only had a few hours to complete the same distance as earth to a satellite; 700km! The children were set in teams and rotated from cycling to running to cheering. By the end of the morning; we had very proudly reached the satellite; and beyond as we totalised our cycling and running combined to 722km! It was a fantastic event and everyone asked if we could organise it again!
