Soil Association

We’re proud to announce that North Yorkshire County Council Facilities Management Services have been recognised by the Soil Association through their Food for Life served here Silver Award.

Over 300 schools from across the county have worked with our Catering team to achieve this prestigious award which recognises our commitment to serving fresh, environmentally sustainable and ethical food, championing local producers and making healthy eating easy.

This has been a huge group effort from all the schools and our team and we are delighted to be the largest county in the UK to hold this award.

The Soil Association Food for Life scheme assesses seven key areas:

  • Seasonal
  • Organic
  • Sustainable
  • Free range
  • Local
  • Traceable

June Taylor, Operations Manager for Catering commented, “Working with our schools on this programme has given us the opportunity to really focus on what is important to us when delivering our service and looking after the needs of pupils.”

“75% of our food is freshly prepared from scratch and we have now increased the amount of organic produce to 5% of all food used in schools.”

“We also ensure that all eggs are free range, ingredients come from local suppliers and meat can be traced back to the farm. This award has been an invaluable learning experience and we are confident in our ability to continue to develop our offer even further”.

The team has previously held the bronze award, with the progression to Silver showing the real drive to deliver exceptional catering services to the schools and pupils.

This acknowledgement from the Soil Association Food for Life served here scheme cements the Council’s commitment to schools, complementing the holistic approach the Catering team takes in delivering a range of added value services to education providers.
